I am looking to do a report on how the recession has effected Denver Colorado. I feel as if a good place to start would be to compile what statistics are important when measuring a recession. Also, what websites, are keeping track of the recession’s impact. Specific City information would be helpful as well.

i don’t know about specific city information but you could use the following statistics.
1, growth /shrinkage of economy ie jobs available local spending and who is spending it and where
2, financial data mortgages lending spending etc
3, consumer confidence ie how happy and safe to people feel about their job security etc and how willing they are to gamble on doing something ie, do they feel their job is safe enough to splurge or are people holding onto money
also try contacting you local council/authority or even the whitehouse and see if the have the data you want
hope it`s helpful as a start it`s all i can think of for the moment
Unemployment is what matters to most people, but it is a lagging indicator so people watch leading indicators to make economic decisions.
