I’m looking for some good, busy forums about improving your home etc. In particular, somewhere to find information about blinds / curtains.

HGTV.com has Forums that have a whole list of topics from Real Estate to Remodeling. You could also take a look at TOH.com or DIY.com there are a lot of them just do a google search.
You have to be a subsciber to the magazine but that is not a problem, it is called Homebuilding & Renovating mag, they cover all areas of building, from digging footins to painting the walls.
go on MYDECO.COM, you can design your own room in 3d and put in furniture and stuff so you can see what it will look like. it also has some looks that you can do.
