You can get a lot of nice things like lamp tables, coffee tables, lamps, bedroom headboards, dressers, dining table and chairs picture frames (take out thee photo and put in mirror glass) and bookcases at the local thrift shop and also second hand stores. Sometimes you have to go back several times before something good come along. Just bought a pretty wooden footstool with a pretty needlepoint top in good condition there several months ago. As for decorative stuff, vases and the like, look around. It is even better to hit thrift shops or second hand stores in the affluent areas where you live. Some stores are affiliated with hospital groups and a lot of volunteers bring in things that look pretty new. They generally have a better choice of stuff to choose from. I furnished my first apartment with second hand and thrift store purchases and still love many of the things I bought then.

M had some great suggestions (Thrift Shops) Also try garage sales. I try to go to garage sales most Saturday mornings. Figure out the nicer parts of your city and focus on sales in that area. The garage sales are usually listed in the newspaper.

Also make a list of items you are looking for and send an email blast out to friends and family letting them know if they are purging any of the items they need you would be willing to barter with them. For example in exchange for some decorative mirrors I will make us dinner or help them out in areas they may need help.

Hope this helps! Best! sally
