If you live in New York then that is a lot of space. Our first house was 900 sq. ft. and we had 2 kids too and we lived there for 4 years. As your children get bigger than the place you live in will need to get bigger. But for the 2 of you then I think that is a good start. It is a buyers market right now and I would buy as much sq. ft. for your dollar. Everybody accumulates stuff over time especially if you plan on having kids. I now have a 3300 sq. ft. house. Congratulations on your engagement.

With you being a new couple, no, it will be fine.

Save as much $ as you can. You can get a bigger place later.

Nope. The first time I moved in with my fiance we shared a space smaller than 500 sq ft. You may have to get rid of some stuff or get storage and live simpler… but it’s about priorities and an end goal in mind. If you are saving for a house it might be a good idea or if you spend the difference on going out or vacations you might think it’s worth it.

My fiance and I have lived in an apartment about that size. It’s long and narrow with a very small kitchen, and really, no dining area. We’ve been here for almost 9 years and it works pretty well for us. The only thing that I have issues with is the lack of storage space, however, it keeps the ‘junk’ stuff at bay. The other is that, I like doing crafts and there is no room for anything like that, oh, and the lack of closet space. We’re pretty much laid back, and I think that helps. Plan for wall units and use space in a creative way. Keep things minimal, organized, and compromise on the things that are important, your relationship. The money we save goes a long way. Now that we’re ready for a house, we can make the savings available.
