How can someone with a bad rental credit history (apartment) be able to get an apartment in their name?

apartment rental

My friend broke her lease and was reported, now she’s been staying with a relative along with her 4 kids. She’s been trying to get an apartment, but every place has turned her down b/c of that broken lease. Will she ever be able to get an apartment w/o using someone else’s rental credit ?

She needs a rental history as well as proof she can pay her bills on time. If she is staying with a relative she could ask to have the water, power, or phone transferred to her name and make the payments on time. She could also look into finding a roommate and adding her name to that persons lease. She needs to build her credit. She also should get a copy of her credit report and score from the credit bureaus. If there are any mistakes report them immediately to help raise her score. Also, she may want to stay away from large management companies and look for individuals who own only a few properties. They are competing with the big complexes and have a smaller budget to attract new tenants. They are more likely to work with those who have challenges.

your friend needs to pay off the rental lease, which will improve her rental credit. this is a good chance to pay it off while staying with family. it is not wise to use another’s name to obtain credit, against the law, and not right morally. take this as a lesson of life, and move on, it will get better

find an apartment in a 2-family or the like. a small time landlord may not run a credit check.
