Can you have three people on a lease (or rental agreement) if it is a 2 bedroom rental apartment?

apartment rental

I want to move in with my boyfriend, but he has a roommate that is on the lease with him. If I do get put on the lease than I already agreed to pay a third of the rent. Is it possible to have a third person on the lease if the place is only a two bedroom? Does it have to be a three bedroom house?

It should be ok, couples share a bedroom all the time. My husband and I used to rent a 2 bedroom when our son was a baby so we had one room for us and one for the baby. I don’t see where it’s any different.

Generally speaking, yes. However, always check your rental agreement, state/county occupancy laws, and what your landlord allows.

Yes, you can but you shouldn’t be paying a third of the rent is the both of you are sharing a room. The utilities should be split three ways though. Be careful, this situation can become difficult since you two are a couple and he’s on his own.

There are a lot of variables to consider here.

The first is local zoning. There are places where only a specific number of non-related people can occupy a residence. They don’t say you have to be married, but many municipalities don’t want 3 or more unmarried people to occupy the place. There may be other zoning laws that would apply too.

The second is the landlord. Does he care if all three move in? If there are no laws prohibiting it, I think it’s up to him. And you guys and the roommate.

My lease states no more then four adult occupants for the two bedroom I live in.

I had my boyfriend living with me and my sister. All of us on the lease. Do it right and meet hte managers, get on the lease and you all are good to go!

Yes three people should be fine. Just keep in mind just because you are on a lease with two others does not mean you are only responsible for a third of the rent. If your boyfriend or his roommate does not pay, you are responsible for coming up with their share to give to the landlord.
